His maverick, footloose, hunted character is used by a supposed father/daughter team to dive for gold in shark-infested waters. This was based on the book HIS BONES ARE CORAL by British author Victor Canning, and with a pulpy title like that, it was well worth finding after searching a few used bookstores...<br>

With a terrific Hemingway TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT-style fishing boat rocking through stormy waters: Wherein the film begins with a choppily-edited shark attack, the book opens with a plane crash, and he soon meets a pretty girl who introduces him to her father, and, like the movie, is hired to captain a charter where dad can dive for gold in a location guarded by sharks. Our ragged lead winds up fighting for his life to win the girl, and to come out of the situation without getting stabbed by human goons...<br>

The only downside is the second half doesn't live up to the first, being that, like many dime novels of the crime nature, the born loser main character gets too weepy and whipped by the backstabbing dame... but no matter... CORAL was a fantastic read that wouldn't have been discovered by Cult Film Freak without that maligned Sam Fuller flick, ruined by studio henchman, which is not only difficult to understand in the dialogue department, taking place in Cairo where the actors seem like the real thing and thus, dubbed horribly. Even Americans like Arthur Kennedy (playing a Walter Brennan style rummy sidekick from the theatrical TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT directed by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart) and Barry Sullivan rush through their lines: providing what feels like a film noir collage of sneaky conversations with brief bouts of jumbled action. Although, technically, if you center on individual shots, creative camera angles, and a few neatly-flowing non-cut performances by a genuinely cool Bogart-style Burt Reynolds, Mr. Fuller's poetic signature is visible, somewhat, within those murky, muddied waters.<i></i>

KILLER SHARK, a sort of CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS only with a semi-grownup preppy college kid visiting his once American office desk-set turned hardworking fisherman father in Mexico. Starring Roddy McDowall who also co-produced, turning in his usual dependable performance, at this point having worked for a decade, and his character's insecure whininess doesn't get too incessant or annoying, which is good for obvious reasons but there lacks a turnaround worth rooting for. Yet there <i>is</i> a changeling (albeit very quick) and, for the most part, he comes around when dad points out he sounds like a snob, like his mother. Filmed in sparse black & white and showing every nook of the boat including the crowded sleeping quarters, a busy upward deck, a high rise crow's nest and, putting the audience <i>out there </i>a sea, soon enough Roddy's Ted White is part of the group of tough Spanish sailors. He does make one mistake; putting his father in harm's way, and not by a singular KILLER SHARK but a horde of them. Herein the suspense mounts and the plot thickens, progressing from Act One that seemed like a short film docudrama on the predatory creatures and the brave souls who hunt them for a dangerous (and not very lucrative) living.<br>

With a brooding soundtrack, composed by genius maestro Ennio Morricone, orchestrating the title killer whale seeking revenge on Richard Harris's Neo-Ahab, Captain Nolan, for killing the whale's pregnant mate, ORCA is more an oceanic Spaghetti Western than an outright "Creature Feature."<br>
<br>
Once narrowed into the hunt, as Harris — like JAWS scene-stealer, Quint, played by Robert Shaw, did with his two-man-crew to the Great White —leads ORCA (the name of Quint's boat, which means "a large toothed whale") out to sea, or vice versa, it's an entertaining adventure. But in order to make the audience forget about the 1975 shark thriller, this campy whale tale throws it right into our face with a menacing Great White's dorsal fin heading towards a young crewman (Robert Carradine) — only to be saved, at the last minute, by the one monstrosity more powerful than even Spielberg's Carcharodon Carcharias...<br>

But it's the horrendously melodramatic revenge aspect, from the whale against the seafaring Captain, that shifts ORCA into camp-howler territory. One scene involving Harris, a hunter combination of Shaw (along with scruffy boat pilot Keenan Wynn) and Roy Scheieder, and an oceanographic Richard Dreyfuss in the exotic French starlet Charlotte Rampling, the whale actually sees (with a knowing, narrowed eye) his foe seconds after <i>actually</i> causing the sea-town, curved along the surrounding shoreline, to explode in massive flames...<br>

Here's when our doomed anti-hero is forced seaward, going deeper and deeper into the Killer Whale's territory and, straight from the brawny pages of Herman Melville or even Ernest Hemingway, the macho captain wants the whale dead too — what the giant mammal did to Harris's gorgeous friend (a pre-fame Bo Derek) adds fiery insult to injury.... Making up for overlong bouts of tedious arguments on board, the pivotal, entertaining "body count" occurs in the style of a violent and bloody 1970's horror/exploitation flick, and like JAWS, the suspense is channelled into a steady pulse when the creature, unseen, is anticipated within the dark waters — but not for long...<br>

Will Sampson, taking a break from his role as a tortured Sioux with a WHITE BUFFALO chip on his shoulder, provides a hybrid of Dreyfuss style wisdom and Shaw experience — a moral compass swing vote, dead-set against the stubborn and determined Richard Harris who, the likes of Peter O'Toole, Oliver Reed and other intense British actors, whether in good, bad or downright ugly motion pictures, doesn't hold anything back.<br>
