That being Sean Penn, who plays Don, the title character’s best friend, who, like Penn’s character in RACING WITH THE MOON, is on the ecstatic verge of joining the military…<br />

And Jennifer Jason Leigh as the brooding, semi love interest and Anthony Edwards as another of Randy’s pals, only more rebellious… In fact, Edwards’ Tommy was there the night Randy Webster, a troubled teen who desperately yearns for his father’s attention, steals a brand new van by driving through the showroom glass – all while a groovy rock track blares triumphantly, bringing us back to the early 1980's, still reminiscent of the freewheeling 70's. <br />

The first half of RANDY WEBSTER is the most entertaining – before centering entirely on Hal Holbrook’s John Webster, Randy’s grumpy father, who hadn’t a nice word for the troubled, wayward teen: not even when his son signs up for the Navy to follow in dad's footsteps. The chemistry between Holbrook and Randy himself, played by Gary McCleery, is fitfully non-existent: Holbrook's love for his only child would blossom after the untimely death.<br />

McCleery was the local smack-talking, dance-crashing “townie” in TAPS (which also starred Sean Penn, and the second movie in which McCleery’s character is shot by an authority figure, catapulting each storyline)... He plays Randy with the kind of intense energy that pleads to be remembered...<br />

After all, this is a movie about an eventual slaying that, initially reported as defensive by the Houston police department, winds up, as Holbrook’s John investigates further, being yet another “shoot first, ask questions later” situation, supposedly common in this particular Texas area: And here’s where a story full of youthful promise and energy becomes somewhat of an agenda piece, meandering in and out of cold police stations and stuffy courtrooms. That’s not saying the true-life tale doesn’t hold up, but the drive and purpose, like the real Randy Webster, leaves us far too soon: With all the rock music, reckless rebellion and those FAST TIMES actors surrounding our edgy focal point, we really missed out on a party: perhaps if Randy stayed with us a little while longer, the posthumous investigation would mean a lot more to those beyond the family.<br />

Judging by the excessive use of “shaky cam,” it’s obvious director Paul Greengrass, competing with live news coverage during the 2009 Somalian hijacking of an American-run freighter ship, wanted to make a suspenseful thriller that doesn’t seem anything like a motion picture.<br />
<br />
Tom Hanks plays the title character with a sturdy, determined aura, realistic as that perpetually moving lens. Before the emergency situation, Captain Richard Phillips literally runs a tight ship, and, at least according to the film, he’s got a bad feeling after hearing they'll be sailing near Somalian shores without any backup – his unsure expression is warning enough. So, along with the fact this is a highly documented real-life story, it’s no surprise when two ragtag boats, mere specks compared to the gigantic freighter, approach quickly – the first of several involving situations has the crew trying to keep these “Remora” from grabbing hold of the ship's side, which would allow the armed pirates entry.<br />
<br />
Once on board we meet our antagonist leader up close. Perhaps the most unattractive villain in film history, it’s explained by the fact he’s no actor. Resembling an emaciated anvil-faced llama, half-morphed into a sharpened scythe, "Muse" is an edgy, unpredictable and surprisingly sympathetic foe who builds his own jagged momentum. Instead of taking an easy thirty thousand dollars, Muse – goaded by a more outspoken and lethal henchman – wants a couple million.<br />
<br />
The best scenes occur aboard the freighter as the Somalian pirates, along with a poker-faced Phillips, descend into the lower decks to find the missing (or rather, hiding) crew... Then, once the pirates kidnap Philips alone, cramped in a lifeboat resembling a mini submarine, the intensity continues – Hanks wields his reliable chops and, despite some obviously-written dialogue, the spitfire conversations between the good guy and the baddies enhance the contained, claustrophobic, do-or-die atmosphere…<br />
<br />
Sporadic alleviation from the Navy Seals aside, the third act, unlike more energetic scenes aboard the big ship, is a prolonged nail-biting experience that you might wish resolved... a lot quicker.

Here’s an annual holiday you won’t get a Hallmark Card for... Not a nice one, anyhow. For in  a revamped America, to cut down on crime or the frustration that causes it to happen in the first place, people are allowed to break any law without recourse. Simply put, for twelve straight hours the “Land of the Free” becomes a no-holds-barred riot and the upper class needs high priced protection.<br />
<br />
Enter family man Ethan Hawke as James Sandin who, with the best house in the neighborhood thanks to a lucrative job in home security, has made a killing off his neighbors: When the annual Purge happens you need to keep the bad guys out. And for the record, STRAW DOGS wasn’t only remade once: During the final act of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah film, a husband and wife harbor a desperate man that a gang of unruly antagonists want in exchange of their lives. The heavies cause havoc in the exterior, and eventually interior, of their seemingly impenetrable home. Same thing here: after Sandin’s naive son allows a hunted man access inside, a gang of mask-wearing loons prance around the front lawn (imagine the Manson family at a masquerade party) with one lethal goal in their twisted minds. <br />
<br />
Despite the preposterously far fetched plot, the contained atmosphere builds suspense within the perspective of each family member as the invading foes encroach. The video camera device from the low budget PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise is used sporadically... the camera being part of the son’s remote control vehicle… adding edgy horror flick atmosphere to the bloody action. And while Ethan Hawke has a decent character arc, turning from mild mannered rich guy into John J. Rambo, gang leader Rhys Wakefield is the most fun to root against.<br />
<br />
Although the final twist, as the true villains are revealed, is somewhat contrived and ultimately anticlimactic, this is an entertainingly nerve-racking thriller that goes in one ear and out the other. And in less than ninety minutes, you won’t have time to realize how stupid you might feel for enjoying yourself in the process. <br />
