Val Kilmer in KILL ME AGAIN Year: 1989 Rating: **1/2 |
A perpetually sexy/sultry stare with pursed full lips in a steamy Reno-set 1980's Neo Noir fits both femme fatale Joanne Whalley and her then-husband Val Kilmer... as a crookedly gorgeous dame who just stole her crazy boyfriend's stolen cash, and the kind of private investigator that usually narrates with a world-weary monotone...
But crime melodrama director John Dahl leaves the simple story more to close-up visuals than too much pulpy wordplay... Whalley's Fay Forrester actually gets the idea to hire Kilmer's Jack Andrews to pretend killing her by reading a tabloid magazine headline... all so that psychopathic Madsen's Marty will no longer dog her rural, scorching desert, cheap-motel-hopping, bag-of-cash trail...

Michael Madsen in KILL ME AGAIN |
Before Quentin Tarantino turned slow-burn modern-noirs into fast-paced, ultra-violent rollercoasters it was this kind of sexually--driven sizzle the likes of Robert Towne's TEQUILA SUNRISE before and Kilmer's TOP GUN director Tony Scott's REVENGE (or this director's THE LAST SEDUCTION) after, or Dennis Hopper's THE HOT SPOT... all wherein noir had more than a touch of searing nighttime soap...
Speaking of Quentin... Michael Madsen, who he'd soon turn into an instant cult-movie icon as the sadistic Mr. Blonde in RESERVOIR DOGS is almost equally as formidable as Whalley's double-crossed partner-in-crime, torturing our central PI's central source Jon Gries before killing him (much like Joe Don Baker to Andy Robinson in Don Siegel's CHARLEY VARRICK)... and while Madsen dons his usual handsomely devilish, brow-grimaced aura, it would take a fantastic script to make him fantastic...

Joanne Whalley-Kilmer (now Joanne Whalley) in KILL ME AGAIN |
Instead, KILL ME AGAIN is a mellow b-movie that sometimes fails to revel in its secondary marquee status, playing more like a mainstream thriller lacking the finance to bring it above what often feels like a decent made-for-cable movie...
And given his talent, Val Kilmer... whose offbeat timing, smouldering charisma and cocky charm can make an otherwise mediocre film better (TOMBSTONE)... just kind of rides shotgun in his own noir vehicle, providing the gorgeously manipulative Whalley relatively little to manipulate.
