STANLEY BAKER INVESTIGATES HARDY KRÜGER IN 'CHANCE MEETING'

Title: CHANCE MEETING Alternative: BLIND DATE Year: 1959 Rating: **1/2

The first of a handful of movies directed by Joseph Losey and starring, or in this case co-starring, British actor Stanley Baker, as a cop providing pointed questions for frantic answers by flustered slain rich woman's lover Hardy Krüger...

Who, balancing genuine surprise with a glib indifference, spends most of the picture dealing with Baker's intensely probing (yet living room located) interrogation — and the French title's translation is INSPECTOR MORGAN'S INVESTIGATION, proving that Baker's importance goes beyond the token hard-boiled noir cop role...

Although a little more than a quarter of this three-man-stage-like-production, including a rival inspector making surreptitious calls to Scotland Yard, consists of flashbacks of Krüger (as told to Baker) with older yet still lovely Micheline Presle as Lady Fenton who, first meeting at a museum to romancing at the central lavish apartment/crime scene, breaks the monotony of all the present-time dialogue — but not enough for a completely worthwhile collaboration of one of England's and German's finest actors...

Yet the overall suspicious vibe intensifying the culprit's paranoia turned up in Orson Welles's lavish European production of Franz Kafka's THE TRIAL, yet it's unclear if CHANCE MEETING was ever influenced by this Joseph Losey sophisticated mystery/thriller that, while lacking the necessary thrills, will keep you guessing for the outcome.
