SAM HUGHES: THE ANTAGONIST OF 'THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE'

Uptight Royalties-seeking fan SAM HUGHES from THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE in 1975

One of the best scenes in THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE has two fans arguing... over something that began with an uptight fan not wanting the cameras in the concert, being as they were, of course, filming a movie... so basically, this guy doesn't want you seeing him in a movie that he's in and that you're watching...

And his name's Sam Hughes, who looks more like a rabid connoisseur of 70's Math-Rock than a Deadhead, wanting future royalties if this moment winds up in the movie (and of course, it did)... so he makes a bet with a far more open-minded and affable fan, John Williams, a cross between a social worker and hostage negotiator, on whether Sam will wind up paying to see the movie in theaters. Wondered who won that bet? Did Sam ultimately give in... if simply to witness himself (as the forerunner to Mr. Pink) vocally crashing this otherwise mellow concert film? And by the way, the reason for these horrible-looking photos is this scene was shot in the dark with a very grainy lens.
