ORSON WELLES ANSWERS A LAST-MINUTE DICK CAVETT QUESTION

Orson Welles's companion/actress Oja Koder in THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND

In a 1970 interview on The Dick Cavett Show, Orson Welles was asked a final question after an hour discussing subjects ranging from Adolf Hitler to Winston Churchill, and with literally two minutes left Dick threw a bizarre, risque, avant-garde "left field pitch" that Orson QUICKLY hit out of the park...

And while the question/subject has NOTHING to do with these accompanied screen-captures from Welles's risque/avant-garde labor-of-love THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND, his gorgeous girlfriend/collaborator Oda Kodar is the perfect representation of timeless, stimulating beauty, so, here goes...

DICK CAVETT: Has anyone ever made a pornographic masterpiece?

ORSON WELLES: I think it could only be a masterpiece of pornography, but not a masterpiece which was pornographic… If you... understand what I mean…

In other words, if what you’re after is to excite people… sexually… over-excite them or stimulate them… then it should be possible to make a film which is exciting… and is therefore a masterpiece of excitation… But you cannot make a film-masterpiece which is pornographic… Because the material is antipathetic… to the film…

You can get as dirty as you want but not also excite people because exciting people during the course of a story… exciting them sexually… is changing the subject so completely that you have no more narrative form…

DICK CAVETT (after pause): There goes my project! (audience laughter)
