Susan Strasberg in Scream of Fear Year: 1961 Rates: ****1/2 |
Hybrid of Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW about a crippled protagonist stuck in what could be impending danger, and Hammer Films PARANOIAC, their second Hitchcock-style thriller after this one, SCREAM OF FEAR...
Trading in the usual classic monsters building suspense and slowburn thrills with chaste and completely vulnerable Susan Strasberg who, as the daughter of an absent rich man, returns to the family's seaside manor... that sporadically haunts and scares her silly...
Yet the surrounding characters are quite friendly: a professional-minded Christopher Lee as a German doctor, handsome Ronald Lewis as a stalwart chauffeur, and a much too friendly and helpful Ann Todd as the relatively new mother-in-law...
Making FEAR a Mystery only in what Strasberg's wheelchair-bound Penny doesn't know... Is she or isn't she really seeing her dead father turning up within darkened portions of the already dark house? And because it's intentionally upfront/obvious that she's being toyed with, as well as, like in PARANOIAC, goaded into insanity because of a future inheritance, the terrific finale is an unpredictable twist of a twist.
