YOUNG BRITISH BLONDE BEAUTY GILLIAN HILLS AS 'BEAT GIRL'

Gillian Hills as BEAT GIRL Year: 1960

BEAT GIRL is like two movies in one, and both are pretty great with the insanely gorgeous Gillian Hills, a hybrid of Sue Lyon's LOLITA and Diane Lane in RUMBLE FISH: All three looking dynamic in B&W while this more obscure gem centers on teenagers wild about the Stateside "hopeless and soapless" Beatnik movement, grooving to the jazz score of composer John Barry (featuring his live John Barry Seven)...

And when the wayward/lackadaisical youngsters aren't hanging-out, the main plot centers solely on Gillian's Jennifer Linden, a rich spoiled brat of sixteen (her real age), who unfairly loathes her architect father David Farrar's new wife (Noelle Adam), a pretty yet earthy, twenty-something French girl — with a past...

A fitfully cliché "stubborn/reluctant kid hating her new stepmom" device has Jennifer investigating a particular location seedier than even those darkened java joints (one in an actual cave and the other the usual Beat "coffee bar")...

Enter vulture-like strip-club owner Christopher Lee, setting his sites on the jailbait teen right away ("why waste a good figure?"): but she's too busy getting revenge on daddy's trophy wife to care about this pointed, creepy seduction...

Yet it's not all tricks and talk with a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE "chicken" race involving a young Oliver Reed (who hangs and dances at the same club) vs our starlet and her friends: a gorgeous Shirley Anne Field (linked to lanky and boozing Peter McEnery), who in real life was lusted after by Elvis-like British pop charter Adam Faith, holding his guitar to conveniently insert random tunes...

In what often plays out like one of those semi-musical teen angst flicks sans expository plot-moving songs, or cliche gang-jackets and fist fights, BEAT GIRL is the epitome of teen-exploitation including partial nudity that involves auditioning Claire Gordon and especially real life exotic dancer Pascaline...

Countered by hardened and experienced club manager Delphi Lawrence as a smoky-voiced femme fatale stripper representing the darker side of what's alternately titled WILD FOR KICKS, all seeming an excuse to introduce and/or exploit intoxicating blonde-haired, full-lipped beauty Hills...

An underage starlet and singer, whose "Zou Bisou Bisou" was famously covered in MAD MEN (and "Tut Tut Tut Tut" in QUEEN'S GAMBIT). And who, alas, Stanley Kubrick would mostly obscure facially, speeding up the William Tell-blaring CLOCKWORK ORANGE ménage à trois scene where she's one of the two ice-cream licking record store girls: Then again, a clearer look at Gillan would've been a major distraction: She'd have cured Alex, all right, and right away at that!
