BEWARE OF 'BLOOD BEACH' W/ DARRELL FETTY & LENA POUSETTE

Title: BLOOD BEACH Year: 1980
BLOOD BEACH is an inspired, intentionally campy Jaws-clone that intentionally never reaches the water, and with a few payoffs, including each death scene, ranging from BIG WEDNESDAY party dude Darrell Fetty as a deputy/musician  to a few doomed locals sucked into the sand...

And then investigated by some great actors not only wasted, but marring the horror element including old school drably dressed Burt Young, Otis Young (no relation... Otis is the tall black dude from THE LAST DETAIL who looks nothing like Rocky Balboa's sloppy brother-in-law) and John Saxon in an investigation phase that, sadly, not only takes over the fun but practically smothers it... Basically, too much discussion on what already happened and not enough things happening makes for a rather dull beach...

LENA POUSETTE gorgeous in BLOOD BEACH Film Rates: **1/2
And yet, with Marianna Hill (whose cult credits range from RED LINE 7000 to MESSIAH OF EVIL to THE GODFATHER PART II) as one of two leads including this film's Roy Scheider in a rather bland David Huffman as the good sheriff and an extremely gorgeous Lena Pousette... making this one of those "midnight movies" despite mostly taking place in bright daylight..

You know, when the beaches are crowded with would-be, well-deserved victims, but in this case, not crowded enough... Had there been more sand-slurping death sequences this would really be something other than yet another Jaws-Clone. Like, say, more bikini babes to feel more wonderfully exploitative or something: After all, what would be wrong with BLOOD BEACH BLANKET BINGO?

ACTRESS QUOTE BONUS: And talk about low budget awesomeness... When Lena Pousette's character Marie buys the farm, or rather, buries the beach, it doesn't sound like the production needed those irriating things called film permits: Mere obstacles and bulwarks in those days of wonderful guerilla style filmmaking...

LENA POUSETTE: "About the death scene. It was shot late at night in Santa Monica. I couldn't scream... They were afraid the cops would be called. They pulled me under the sand... pretty cool." Pretty and cool indeed. And speaking of pretty, below is another picture of one of the hottest starlets in exploitation cinema history.
