Sarah Patterson in A COMPANY OF WOLVES Year: 1984 Rates: ***1/2 |
Not just another werewolf story and with the true darkness of a fairy tale, THE COMPANY OF WOLVES gets the illogical "logic of a dream" just right as Sarah Patterson's Rosaleen is lost "in the woods" (she'd fallen asleep reading) with many twisty, nightmarish avenues: an entertaining ride for both the dreamer and the audience...
Ranging from seemingly naive cottage-dwelling marrieds to a dream-within-a-dream of a sinister Victorian wedding party, the only downfall is the casting of a much too old Prince Charming of sorts: not just for the age, but, until he shows his true colors, he's a bit dull, miscast. Which doesn't mean Neil Jordan's Gothic fantasy/horror ever slows down. Timeless, classic young beauty Sarah Patterson wields the perfect amount of fertile innocence and roving curiosity. And there's a wolf-morphing sequence that, even after AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON set the stage, is still downright sinister, formidable, eerie and original, like the movie.
