Scorchy with Connie Stevens YEAR: 1976 Score: ***1/2 |
Here we have a woman with layers: Connie Stevens plays an undercover cop out to thwart a drug-smuggling operation of drugs imported inside dolls from Greece to
America (basically the plot of Don Siegel's Film Noir THE LINEUP)...
When
she's not swimming naked or bedding down Greg Evigan she's kicking ass
and taking names: like Caesar Danova, who she's pretending to work for, providing the top villain spot aka sophisticated villain ala Fernando Rey from THE FRENCH CONNECTION: Although it's William Smith, as the menacing henchman, that she really
contends with, especially during a citywide chase scene where she happens upon a dune buggy with keys inside: Simply put, Stevens is sublimely miscast here, and has the juice to make this lemon shine; but it's a lemon with layers including a techno soundtrack that was either re-dubbed years
later during the Miami Vice craze or, for better or worse, was very
ahead of its time. Either way, if you can find a decent transfer, it's an entertaining, semi-deranged ride.
