That's probably what James Cagney felt. And hey, what's a guy without a doll?<br /> <br /> Cut to a few years later, when British actress Sylvia Syms would take to the sea in FERRY TO HONG KONG with Orson Welles... Be sure the already legendary actor/director asked her about working with his favorite all-time performer, James Cagney, who he described as never being hammy no matter how energetic, but "focused, like a laser-beam." And in G-MEN he's an awkward young lawyer going up against the mob after, during initial training – pummeled by Lloyd Nolan while goaded by Robert Armstrong of KING KONG fame while here he's the man in-charge, training agents himself against a dictator who considered the giant ape epic his second, not first, favorite movie... LIVES OF THE BENGAL LANCER won the prize. The peripheral  suspense involves the behind-the-scenes Cagney, trying to piece together what his co-lead has already figured out, which won't be hard for the audience: Who exactly is the Nazi spy, and what's he up to exactly?<br /> <br /> The guilty party is, for a little while, kept unaware to us and the fictional characters until, like many a crime flick, he's surreptitiously followed to a bigger catch instead of getting busted outright. During the first half, Cagney didn't have to say or do much. Instead he pretty much knew everything, those eyes darting to and fro with a sage wisdom compared to the hyper "kid" in those delicious programmers throughout the 1930's.<br /> <br /> And so, taking a few steps ahead of this better than average post-war thriller, 13 RUE MADELEINE, we can thank God, or the stars, or both that Cagney did one more Gangster flick in 1949 before gliding through conventional A-List pictures during the last twelve years of his career. After the war had altered countless human lives, it also reshaped the cinematic cadence that Cagney had been building since being shifted from the second banana to the leading role in his game-changer, PUBLIC ENEMY. So if it weren't for WHITE HEAT, enveloping his entire career perfectly after a decade-long crime hiatus following ROARING TWENTIES, there'd be no closure... Most likely... not very much!<br /> <br /> But the real shame is he wound up so iconic, endearing and ultimate A-list, he refused to completely return to form, that is if you don't count a one-dimensional Mobster role in a Doris Day movie... most don't and you shouldn't either...<br /> <br /> We can only imagine if he yearned for nostalgia and hooked onto a crime melodrama b-picture that the French renamed after Cagney had quit acting following Billy Wilder's reportedly anal direction (he liked to go for it while Billy preferred many takes) on the hyperactive Cold War romp ONE, TWO, THREE. God, the thought of a James Cagney Film Noir is... too much to yearn for. Although, the gangster flicks and the fun crime ventures before the merciless Cody Jarrett went out "On Top of the World,  Ma" were, despite their occupation, good guys deep down. So that'll have to be his Noir... Cagney Noir. CagNoir. It's difficult to explain but it's prominent in ZAPATA!, and for those who've blacklisted Elia from their wheelhouse of film-watching, you're not only missing out historically, but are simply not learning everything needed to capture the progression of 1950's cinema... While he was Benedict Arnold to a group of rich artists who, for some strange reason, thought a political system that wielded no artistic freedom to create motion pictures was the way to go, he was an Abe Lincoln to the art of Filmmaking, something America, despite all its flaws, was all about from the minute motion pictures (pictures with motion) were invented... So just GET OVER IT ALREADY!<br> </div>

And instead of being on the way to Australia, reluctantly taking the job... this time, of a Gunfighter... Garner's excuse is he's waiting three days for the local doctor to remove a tattoo of a woman's... an old woman's... name on his chest: horrible writing at its best, or worst. Ironic that, though the King is mentioned throughout, he only (really) turns up in that one jovial scene, trying to change More's heart by simply being his friend. From the decade's beginning up until around 1967, when the Renaissance Era began and would continue throughout the 70's, the FADE OUT button was overused by editors, ultimately deleting the overall importance and intensity of certain scenes... almost like they never existed... and you're never quite sure how much time before the new scene began: could be a minute or a year, making the actors have to start all over again. And while John Hurt's terrific role as a young, selfish Richard Rich, falling in step with Leo McKern's shifty middleman instigator, begins to get edgy and intriguing, the film quickly turns from a sort of Roman Catholic espionage into a downer where... well... our MAN is imprisoned for a very long time, viewed through montage, and then executed. And while the superb acting exceeds the direction, which is also good, along with the fade-outs, SEASONS can be encumbered with deliberate angles striving to equal the greatness of the man it represents, or the celebrated stage play in which it's based. But overall, everything does connect. And Scofield is a MAN who, truthfully, is hard to root for completely... Like Welles had stated, anyone playing a character so "right" isn't quite relatable to we common folk with a penchant for anti-heroes, and along with his suffering family, including a gorgeous Susannah York, who understand putting God above the King but not above his life, while basically shoving his family aside. But that gives more power to Scolfield's performance. He's completely on his own. His face rarely changes. And yet, not only by words, he speaks volumes. For such a saint, he wields an often devilish expression. Making this one of those roles no one else could have played. And in the old days, the Oscars were magnetized in that direction.

Leading the viewer into smoky backrooms and dingy apartments, where the gangsters plot their schemes.<br> <br> And at first, from when he wanders in a criminal shrug off the boat to the real locale full of floating slums clashed with vivid and vibrant, beautiful colors, Stack really seems like a man on his own; but with that voice, even for those not familiar with the original, he's obviously snooping around for some reason... For the Military Police, actually... Sent by Noir stock actor Brad Dexter to find out who killed a local during a rushed prelude. Sure this is a spoiler but anyone familiar with the original sees it coming. Although it must be said, Stack does a pretty good job playing slimy and shady... while it lasts...<br>

But a novel completes itself, as did those too-long episodes, which, seeming more of the Thriller template than bizarre Science-Fiction, only lasted one season, Number Four, which is why it's not available on Netflix and is rarely shown on reruns...</p><p>Well FATE IS THE HUNTER is much like a two-hour ZONE: extremely weird yet only because it seems all too normal, somehow... Beginning with a plane crash that you think might have a longer buildup... But he's a fun distraction as FATE eventually shifts from melodramatic to corny/relaxing, and the really weird parts occur during the third act...</p><p></p><p></p><p>What Glenn Ford does to find out what happened, concerning FATE, is not only far-fetched but is still downright confounding (the usually subtle icon often goes into ham overdrive along with airline manager, and always intense character-actor, Nehemiah Persoff)... And it all winds up serving a hybrid of Asian Spiritualism (a reboot of Buddhism later referred to as New Age) with a touch of Film Noir Mystique. And FATE OF THE HUNTER goes on an hour longer than the already overlong ZONE episodes, and could possibly be the most bizarre, uneven and confounding motion picture ever made. Take a guess who's who. And on the flip-side of the coin are two Germans: One isn't bullied at all but very brooding, charming, handsome, and deadly when he has to be while the other is a full-blown Nazi, bringing to the table all that that name brings...<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: left;"> </div> Marlon Brando and Maximilian Schell as German officers Lt. Christian Diestl and Capt. Hardenberg, contrary in that one fights because he has to while the other is having a glorious time in battle. Brando, as usual, is great to watch as he, using a brilliant, unique form of Broken English playing a German, wields his usual non-deliberate chops that don't seem like a performance, and unlike his roles in early Kazan features, Schell is pretty much caught up with his partner's style, almost equal in non-performance, only one has a much better role to play... War gets in the way of pretty much everything! People have noticed. New fans probably not so much. Old fans, definitely. New fans love the show for the same reason the old fans are growing tiresome. The characters are so good, the show has run out of stories, and simply relies on things like, "Did you see Daryl's arms this week?" "Carol sure was acting strange, wasn't she?" "Will Rick go into another deep depression and leave the others hanging?" "Who will die... it has to be someone?" And especially now, after that baseball bat bashing the likes of THE UNTOUCHABLES. The characters are like family, so we don't care what they do, we just enjoy them there; and yet, sometimes, are annoyed they don't do enough... for us!<br /> <br /> Now, onto FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, a sort of urban, dark, grittier version of WALKING as in, downtown L.A. was a harsher place to be before "The Turn" than woodsy Georgia, and the characters, while far less interesting, all looking very similar and with a few expectations, not really standing out from each other, following a lackluster first Season that seemed like grainy newsreel footage, we have set out to sea and, so far, each and every episode is doing what the first two seasons of Frank Darabont's WALKING DEAD did... providing twists, turns and unpredictable endings along with scrapes and last-minute plans and attacks, and other things spontaneous and nail-bite exciting, setting the plot up front and the people to the back... Where frankly, they need to be on THE WALKING DEAD. For as much as we love Rick, Daryl, Carol, Maggie, Michonne, and the rest, now all captive by a guy who makes the Governor seem like Tinkerbell, there needs to be episodes that, while providing a serialized continuation, have a beginning, middle, and... almost an end: This is what FEAR THE WALKING DEAD i.e. DEAD IF BY SEA has been doing, and, finally off that boring urban landscape and into the modern day pirate-filled sea, it's getting better and better. Meanwhile, so, Daryl has muscles, and Carol's not your usual soccer mom type, and Rick gets angry: So f---ing what! We know this already! Yes, sure, character-driven is everything... but let's go somewhere like before, or characters will hinder instead of delivering, like they used to...
