This trio of eclectic and likeable astronauts, using last names only... Brubaker, Willis and Walker... separate across a vast desert, taking a sporadic survival story backseat within their own central storyline. Meanwhile, an affable and lightweight Elliott Gould is rather out of place under the ultra-serious direction of Peter Hyams. A few years earlier, he reigned as flaky smooth-talkers under improvisational auteur Robert Altman in films like MASH, THE LONG GOODBYE and CALIFORNIA SPLIT. So this is basically the tail-end of Gould's prime/peak popularity... <br />

So the titular vessel really doesn't go anywhere since the astronauts, at the last minute before ignition — occurring at a steady-paced fifteen minutes or so into the picture — are given a locked-door speech by Hal Holbrook, turning in a sophisticated villain role, especially while providing a beautiful verbal combination of patriotic reverie under a bewitching spell of remorseful repose — yet most of his other scenes merely concern sitting in the "Houston Room" with a finger on the dump button, just in case the idealistic Brubaker (Brolin) decides to go off script, and thus, ruin the whole show... literally. <br />

The only real problem with the otherwise perfectly lightweight and entertaining CAPRICORN ONE is how quickly Gould catches on to (or that he catches on at all to) an <i>extremely</i> farfetched connection concerning Brubaker's wife (the always-annoying Brenda Vacarro), rushing the proverbial bridge (while literally driving over a real one) to have an ending point in sight...<br />

Along the way, some of the best scenes involve character-actor Robert Walden, the smartest of the Houston techies, figuring something's off and not only making his buddy Caulfield (Gould) curious, but genuinely catapulting the plot into motion: ultimately involving an 11th hour "Guest Star" Telly Savalas in a dilapidated underdog desert biplane verses shiny and formidable government helicopters that, after all the brainy espionage, closes the door with simplistic and frolicking action...<br />
<br />
If ever there's discovered a more sublime example of Sick Day Afternoon Cinema, to pass the time while enjoying passing time, let us know, because this ONE is the CITIZEN KANE of time-filling fluff... You will always find a brand new situation here on CULT FILM FREAK, a movie review website that learns along the way... And so, while watching LONDON HAS FALLEN, yours truly had no idea (or had simply forgotten) that OLYMPUS had FALLEN beforehand: as now, American President Benjamin Asher, played by THE DARK KNIGHT dimple-chinned Aaron Eckhart, and really starring Gerard Butler as Mike Banning have, well, another big crisis on their hands...<br />

Now, not having seen OLYMPUS, this particular writeup will center only on LONDON, without comparison... Either way, it's pretty obvious Mike Banning is the greatest Secret Service Agent on Earth. Seeming to have taken classes from Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood flicks, he's the man of the hour... From the onset, as the two important muscular guys are jogging outside the White House, it's obvious who's the strongest of the two... Darwin's theory is kinda lost here...<br />

For the physically weakest, Eckhart is indeed the "Leader of the Free World," and if you could fathom having to read a hundred names from a phone book just to burn it to shreds thereafter, this is the most annoying LONDON gets as<i> every person's</i> name is displayed below themselves when first shown, in several regions... and hardly any are important enough for that to occur in the first place...<br />
<br />
Instead, who really matters are those two previously mentioned joggers that, while attending a beloved Prime Minister's funeral in England, wind up in a dark THIRD MAN underworld beneath the literally explosive London streets and, before and during one of the biggest terrorist raids in history, much of the film is Butler's agent keeping his President not only alive down there, but from getting captured and, most important and nightmarish to imagine, filmed (and forever viewable for his son) on YouTube, being possibly executed by agents working for... well that's one of the few people who really matter, at least of the bad guys, and he gets about a minute of screen-time... or less.<br />

So while LONDON isn't exactly a deep and/or flawless film, with far too many deaths for a viewer to take, it's not too shabby for a testosterone-heavy action-thriller relying on friendship and explosions...<br />

Also, not knowing till after of its sequel status, FALLEN is upped a notch since sequels are usually god-awful. And throughout the exterior noise and interior conversations, ranging from helicopter chases to hacker backrooms to Veep Morgan Freeman's Washington roundtable, we mainly center on the two friends: one that loves his family more than his important job, and the other who knows his own less-important yet much more (cinematically) involving job well enough to make all the distractions not matter a bit.<br />

Meanwhile, a woman would have given Kirk Douglas's freelance harpooner a lot more to sing to, and about, than a seal within a very special submarine/boat that, among other things, Kirk secretly collects a cache of treasure and booze inside as battle-ship rammer James Mason's Captain Nemo uses the machine's pointed exterior to rid the ocean of ships carrying weapons for that horrible creation called War...<br />

And in this multi-layered, completely entertaining 1954 Disney adventure, there are plenty of characters to center on including two buried leads for their scientific value, yet only one, Mason's brilliant yet borderline insane Nemo, is the entire reason for the group to go 10,000 leagues deeper than a book taken seriously by everyone at that time, written by the famous Prof. Pierre Aronnax (the Jules Verne of the movie), played by a subdued, grounded, very important (and narrating) Paul Lukas, who becomes more of an unappreciated middleman between the edgy Nemo and the cocky, rogue Douglas; the latter who, years later, would possibly inspire Steve McQueen in THE GREAT ESCAPE and/or Han Solo in STAR WARS, stealing the movie outright, as if it were his very own... like that stolen treasure in the seal's room. But the conversations between Professor Aronnax and Captain Nemo range from pretty much everything: to the war, basic human nature and our overall existence.<br />

And last but not least is an aged Peter Lorre, more heavyset and friendly than his eerie and sinister youth, resembling character-actor Burt Young (before there was a Burt Young to be compared to).<br />

Lorre's Conseil is the only thing (moral compass) really holding back Douglas's Ned Land from continuing to steal more and more treasure that Nemo had taken from the sea floor, and that Ned wanted to do beforehand, while Nemo's busy destroying war ships, which is how, after a mysterious first act, boats were supposedly being ferociously and fatally attacked by a rumored, unstoppable sea beast... initially bringing the three investigative leads together in the first place: all reluctantly "rescued" into the classy mad man's submarine, The Nautilus. And eventually, during the famous conclusion, a giant formidable squid tries taking the sub/ship, and crew, apart with its powerful tentacles...<br />

Herein Douglas finally <i>almost</i> proves his heroic worth to Mason's perpetually untrusting Nemo, although at this point, after a relatively long yet flowing two-hours, the adventure, now taking place on the island where the ill-fated war ships set out to sea, there's a literally explosive conclusion. Just imagine Nemo destroying British war ships on the way to stopping Hitler, and you might just want to kick his idealistic ass...<br />

Well this is obviously years before WWII, and still, the sane trio realizes he's a sick man. But Nemo's edgy, anti-war status is somewhat understandable since these war ships have to do with slavery that he was involved with, and yet, despite the <i>deep </i>stuff, a lot of the film has Douglas hanging with both the cute seal and Peter Lorre, reveling in the booze and booty as Lorre catches tips from the brave hero (while peripherally "protecting" his boss) as Douglas, subliminally becoming a sort of SIERRA MADRE Bogart, only nicer, is yearning to take the treasure chest for himself...<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Nemo considers<i> all</i> the underwater elements to be the real treasures and/or discoveries, ranging from aquatic elements that can make food and cigars... Basically, you can live an entire life underwater, and Nemo needs the Professor as his own personal Captain's log-pen for what could be a glorious journal when (and if) completed.<br />

With a perfect combination of scientific exposition and a handing-off of daring-do adventures, all completely resulting from the characters: from battling headhunters to that awesome giant squid, LEAGUES takes us lower than any movie...<br />

Yet, although dated with a few corny singalongs by an initially hyperactive Douglas (few can get away with such kitsch and still seem cool, wearing a shirt resembling Christmas candy cane, to boot), contrasting with his brainy partners and eventually, all heads connect in one of the best Disney features that... although only slightly wielding dated (albeit completely apt) monstrous creature effects... looks great outside and even better inside as any movie today, especially the plush interior of Nemo's ultimate submarine... Thus the Nautilus, which is also a spooky-looking boat resembling some kind of primal dragon sea monster of the depths, is both a character in itself and the reason for everything to take place, uniting four human beings that couldn't be more different, and yet fitting together, perfectly.<br />

Ironically, within this story, Pee Wee's been hanging around his perfect "Mayberry" type town a bit too long (called Fairville)... But what exactly did he do in the city porn theater no one's allowed to talk about? Okay, that was on purpose to get the comic's infamous Waterloo out of the way, up front. And while Pee-Wee left us, actor Paul Reubens would appear now and again, outright stealing the intentionally cheesy original BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER movie, proving he could still be funny... In fact, his five-second death scene might have been the only laugh in the movie, but it's sure a whopper!<br>

If Richard Pryor had only shaved that signature, comfortable, A-list mustache during the important catapulting Vietnam sequence that, within the page-turning James Kirkwood novel SOME KIND OF HERO there's a lot more dramatic and fleshed-out situations than what we have here: a film in which the main character's capture (shown on the poster, VHS cover and trailers) while taking a neurotic leak in the jungles of Vietnam seem like yet-another Pryor comedy...<br>

Then he sets his sites on something more reliable...<br>

Phillips was a combination of innocence and rebellion… Her character, although a good girl deep down, wanted to venture into the wild California streets, and the performance embodied both a fearless confidence mixed with a shy undertone, making it impossible to imagine any other person in the role... and that actress provides a cameo in GO ASK ALICE, with a scrawl opening up with: “This motion picture is based on the authentic diary of a 15-year-old American girl. The only alterations have been those necessitated by considerations of length and acceptability for family viewing.” Sounds more like the description of a dress than a movie about a girl on drugs and, made in 1973 and centering on the late 1960’s, the colorful clothes are probably the most interesting aspect. Anyone who ever got loaded as a teen knows that you spend a lot of time coming down… Simply put, most of the adventurous trip is a bummer… Waiting and waiting around for more… And more and more and more…<br>
