Sarafian, without having to reach for a Golden Statue, naturally played a character based on Hugh Glass named Zachary Bass: while not the leader of a group of eclectic fur trappers, knows his way around the territory better than anyone and, wandering the woodsy locale, he comes across something that's even more Native than Indians: That being a ferocious bear, leading to an attack that renders Bass unable to move and basically, his group, led by a cold-hearted, world-weary quiet type in John Huston's Captain Henry (his men carrying a miniature arc on a long journey to find the river necessary to sustain their trade) leaves his once-important number-one man behind to die, presuming he's more than halfway to the Pearly Gates already.<br>

But, as we're cinematically reminded more times than even the 1950's Hollywood Blacklist, there were certain unfairly judged human beings back then... young women in this particular case... who literally sparked the formidable rage of narrow-minded religious zealots. And ironically, this time around it's an extremely religious family, especially the patriarch preacher (a visual cross between Jesus and the boss from FLETCH), who are punished and thus, sent out of their gated village to exist within a dense, tree-laden forest, living off the land despite the kids either being too young or distracted; the mother a bit wacky; and dad with very little know-how on exterior survivalism as THE WITCH could very well belong in the Body Count Horror Genre since particular family members, and even animals, are picked-off throughout an arduous two-hours of (possibly intentional) ultra slow-paced dialogue that, while sticking firmly to the speech of that time, feels as if the doomed clan were performing Shakespeare while the audience could've used subtitles to clearly understand the dialogue, especially lines uttered/muttered by the two older, more important kids...<br>

Meanwhile, Gleason gets a chance to knock around Ben's best girl, Linda, played by the gorgeous Victoria Principal who would, in two year's time, co-star in an epic television series in which she's smitten (first engaged and then married to) a handsome, good-natured earthy type with a twisted older brother: all having to do with oil.<br>

The suspense of whether Jess will make it in Show Business equals Mohammad Ali playing himself in THE GREATEST: watching an iconic superstar on the big screen, struggling for fame within their own field of expertise while lacking the intensity, youth and strength that made it possible in the first place, is like a millionaire buying a lottery ticket, and winning.<br>

A career-making role for the late Rod Taylor, who would follow-up with Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, this science-fiction classic has creative relation to THE TWILIGHT ZONE, later on STAR TREK and a blockbuster that Taylor was originally considered to star for, THE PLANET OF THE APES, which would lack the "damn dirty" classic performance but might have been pretty swell.

While the original had moments, it was an overrated mess cleaned up by the additively humorous persona of Ben Stiller, sucking in his cheeks and being the ultimate airhead male supermodel, with most of the jokes centering on a guy who thinks he's flawless while being a complete dolt: an Inspector Clouseau of the modeling world.<br>

When Matthew Modine’s Private Joker questions the rather subdued Lockhart about his safe position, the lieutenant points out the fact he had his ass in the grass, and doesn’t want to go back there. Like Adam Baldwin but in reverse, Terry’s Lockhart sticks firmly to his guns… or in this case, typewriter. Hartman that R. Lee Ermy made quotable and legendary) from a gunning helicopter during a completely overblown and overdone scene bringing Modine to the front lines where, still a journalist, a series of interviews not only take place, but take us right out of the reality of war...<br /> <br /> Thus a linear motion picture that had, after the first two acts, potential to equal the Oscar Winning PLATOON, which, though far from perfect and with a subject a bit too close to writer/director Oliver Stone, remains a character-driven vehicle unlike JACKET, that meanders from genre to genre. Meanwhile, a similar looking (of the helicopter assassin) <u>Ed O'Neil as Touchdown</u>, explains strategic exposition for Pvt. But his departure gives the boys real vulnerability for the last <i>ultra-violent </i>stretch, making up for the pseudo documentary third-act template that doesn’t always work as Arliss Howard’s Cowboy, a nice guy but definitely not a leader, is put in charge of a showdown between an unseen sniper who can’t be properly located... <br /> <br /> That's until scene-stealer Adam Baldwin steps forward, providing Kubrick his most effective camera movements right alongside: this is where we finally have ourselves a bonafide "old school" war flick hero to root for despite the fact JACKET is... like most anti-war ventures, attempting to veer beyond your typical G.I.
