ANOTHER LIST OF POP CULTURE CINEMATIC DISCOVERIES |
Welcome to volume two of the
Pop Culture Spotting in cinema, only this time there are no marquees save for the header: Instead we feature a collection of billboards, calenders, albums, pre-fame cameos and posters seen within motion pictures...
|
SOME HARDCORE STAR WARS PROMOTION |
STAR WARS IN HARDCORE: George Lucas, whose wife Marcia edited TAXI DRIVER, is a giant fan of
the Martin Scorsese classic written by Paul Schrader, who placed several
STAR WARS items throughout his 1979 directed feature, HARDCORE...
There's a billboard outside George C.
Scott's hotel room, a calender in his missing daughter's bedroom and
two strippers are fighting with toy lightsabers, not shown here. And HARDCORE producer John Milius's stock actor Reb Brown
appears as a bouncer tossing George C. Scott from a secret boulevard brothel.
|
STAR WARS calender to the right... Were teenage girls into Darth Vader? |
|
Method actor George C. Scott asked Reb Brown to get really physical, and Reb complied! |
|
Jack Nicholson and Tan Hawaiian Tanya in THE KING OF MARVIN GARDENS |
BILLBOARD IN KING OF MARVEN GARDENS: Lovely Coconut Butter and
Cocoa Oil ad of "Tan Hawaiian Tanya" in Bob Rafelson's THE KING OF
MARVIN GARDENS...
This is Bob's flawed yet intriguing 1972 follow-up for FIVE EASY PIECES, which also starred
Jack Nicholson, whose image is below the Atlantic City billboard.
|
Sylvester Stallone mugs in Woody Allen's 1971 classic BANANAS |
SYLVESTER STALLONE IN WOODY ALLEN'S BANANAS:
Before Sylvester Stallone became a big star, he appeared as a subway
thug in Woody Allen's BANANAS...
Although
there's no dialogue (music plays over the scene), Sly shows his talents
with natural physical movements. Many years later, Woody and Sly would
re-team: providing voices in the computer animated ANTZ.
|
"Yo, Adrian, anyone! HELP!" |
|
John Belushi and D.O.A. |
D.O.A. POSTER IN NEIGHBORS: Gotta
give credit to whoever picked the prop poster for John Belushi's
daughter's bedroom in the dark comedy NEIGHBORS: from the punk band
D.O.A...
The shot begins with a closeup on the poster girl, whose
rebellious image represents Belushi's wild daughter and the way he feels entering her threshold: like being in a purgatory
he cannot understand, making this shot alone representative of the
entire movie.
|
Long Live Rock... Or not |
BOB DYLAN ALBUM IN ROCK N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL: In the Roger Corman production ROCK N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, an evil
principle orders all albums to be burned...
These include all RAMONES
albums (whom the film evolves around), The Stone's STICKY FINGERS, and
Bob Dylan's masterpiece HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED. The image of the icon
burning is actually quite intense: for without Bob, music wouldn't be
the same.
|
Contrived Ad for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE in HOFFA |
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE IN HOFFA: A sign and/or
mini billboard for Stanley Kubrick's classic is spotted in
the limp Danny DeVito biopic HOFFA.
DeVito, a fan of bizarre cinema, obviously had this sign made for a
homage and to set the decade where this scene exists: right before Jack Nicholson's Jimmy buys the farm.
|
Jeffrey Kramer's other film shows up on HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD |
JAWS IN HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD: A year after JAWS, actor Jeffrey Kramer, who played Chief Brody's
very own Barney Fief named Hendricks, appeared in the Roger Corman
production HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD.
As you can see: when Jeff's name is
shown, to the right a JAWS poster is visible. Was this intentional?
|
Oscar Isaac as Llewyn Davis notices a marquee poster |
THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY IN INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS: We can't provide any spoilers to this Coen Brothers
movie set in 1961, centering on a folk singer's odyssey through New
York's Greenwich Village and beyond, titled INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS... But
the unlucky crooner winds up stuck with someone else's orange tabby
and... at one point of the film, this poster to Disney's THE INCREDIBLE
JOURNEY says a lot to the audience and the character...
Noted, JOURNEY didn't come out until 1963, but we'll give the Brothers poetic license because hell, they've earned it!

A passing Olivia Barash quickly singing an original song in THE DOORS |
OLIVIA BARASH IN THE DOORS: Cult Film Freak
interviewee and personal friend, actress and musician OLIVIA BARASH,
co-star of REPO MAN and famous for the intense episode SYLVIA on LITTLE
HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, appeared in Oliver Stone's THE DOORS...
Olivia
plays a crooning hippie chick strolling with her acoustic guitar down
Sunset outside THE WHISKEY as the band passes. She also appears in a
deleted scene when the band's playing GLORIA, singing with Kyle
McLaughlin as Ray Manzerek.
|
Olivia's hippie girl made it inside to jam, but her scene's deleted from the movie |
|
William Smith screaming like mad in THE THING WITH TWO HEADS |
WILLIAM SMITH IN THE THING WITH TWO HEADS: When thinking of the camp classic THE THING WITH TWO HEADS, Rosie Grier or Ray Milland, or Ray Milland and Rosie Grier (order doesn't matter) comes to mind... thanks to an operation, both men become one person!
But how about
iconic tough guy William Smith
playing a death row inmate having one hell of a tantrum as Grier's
being led from his cell into a brand new life...
|
This picture is added just because... it's that unbelievable |
|
Director's kid Sean Penn on an episode of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE |
SEAN PENN ON LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: Leo Penn directed the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE season one episode THE
VOICE OF TINKER JONES in 1974, almost a decade before his son Sean Penn became an international movie star...
And as you can see from the photograph
shown, Sean always had that narrow-eyed scowl that'd
carry through in life and filmdom thereafter.
|
Before KOTTTER, GREASE and FEVER, John Travolta fell on EMERGENCY! |
JOHN TRAVOLTA ON EMERGENCY: Before he became a Sweathog on WELCOME BACK
KOTTER and... all the famous movie characters from Disco Dancer to
Greaser to Hit Man...
JOHN TRAVOLTA got injured in an episode of EMERGENCY titled KIDS from Season 2.
|
"I can't feel my legs! Will I ever dance again?!" |
|
At Abner Goldstein's theater job in THE WHITE SHADOW: An eclectic marquee double feature |
|
In view is a poster for INTERIORS and what looks to be an OLIVER'S STORY poster near it |
|
Pre-Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson and date with an INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS poster |
