"The  Hand Of God" because I just like the essence that there was a message  from Earth. I loved being up in the Star Chamber… I loved the whole  feeling of it. It wasn’t an Apollo episode necessarily, but I just liked  the episode a lot, I thought it kind of left with this kind of mystical  feeling of hope, of something greater out in the universe. I love the  feeling of that. And I thought the original two-hour movie was quite  extraordinary. I thought that was really quite well done.<br />

The  “Shane” episode… That was a nice episode. It gave me a chance to do  something a little more: and obviously they followed on the footsteps of  dealing with his… Apollo had a son… I actually begged for them to leave  my son in Battlestar, at the beginning with Jane Seymour, because I  just felt like the Starbuck character, and all these other characters,  were getting more interesting things to do, and I thought I needed  something to hold onto, I felt, that would give my character an  opportunity for some dramatic possibilities.<br />
<br />
And one of  the things I thought would open up at least an area of interest was to  have a son, which nobody else on the show had, so, I really wanted them  to keep Noah Hathaway in the show, even though I think they were talking  about exiting that character... I asked them to keep that character in.<br />

And  the “Shane” episode, again, he deals with the mother and the son and  that whole relationship thing that, you know, that’s a good place for  Apollo to show himself a little bit, find out a little about who he is,  because he’s kind of like… Just like Adama… You know… He’s that father  that we all wished we had… and Loren Greene was the father we all wished  we had and Apollo was kind of a version of that, so I think that was  smart to do.<br />
<br />
But I did think the original show needed  to get more into exploring the life and death challenges of surviving in  space, every day, and get into the community of Battlestar, rather than  just being on the ship and running down to this planet or that planet,  which is fine to do but I think the best shows in the beginning, that I  loved the most, are where we were trying to help people survive, and  dealing with the ups and downs of trying to rebuild communities, and  trying to deal with the logistics of surviving and all the stories that  would come from that.<br />

I  wish we’d gone more into that, but again, too many cooks in the  kitchen, people who really didn’t love science fiction didn’t get the  sci-fi audience, and I think that it really made it difficult for those  wonderful writers back then to maybe write all the stories they wanted  to.<br />

The  first couple of episodes didn’t have that problem because Apollo… You  know, listen… I know the show’s not just about Apollo, it’s about all  the characters, and everybody deserves their time in the sun, and  everybody deserves to have interesting stories and things to do – my  frustration was I felt, in the beginning, obviously because we’re having  the original catastrophic event happening and then obviously this is a  time when Captain Apollo can be most appreciated, why?<br />

Because in a weird way, he’s kind of like the hero, <span style="font-style: italic;">the </span>hero,  the guy who comes and saves you, right? He’s the guy that, when all  else is failing, and everyone wants to give up, he’s the guy who comes  and doesn’t give up. And that’s very much who Apollo was… He’s the guy  who will lead everybody into danger, and inspire them to do the things  they didn’t think they could do.<br />
<br />
And so those early  shows allowed the Apollo character to blossom a little bit, and you  could appreciate that character more in those original episodes.<br />

Once  we got past that, and just kind of got into the every day living in  space and dealing with that, where it didn’t seem we were in such  danger, then I think slowly but surely the emphasis got switched and,  again, the story’s not about Apollo, I just felt that Apollo didn’t have  much to do.<br />
<br />
And I had multiple lunches with the  writers; it wasn’t about being the star of a particular episode, as much  as it was having interesting themes to play and interesting dramatic  situations that would challenge the Apollo character and bring challenge  for everybody in the show.<br />

<u><span style="background-color: white;">So did you feel they gave more screen time to “Starbuck” (Dirk Benedict) throughout the series?</span></u><br />

Why  do the girls always go for the bad guy or the naughty guy? I think  writers love to write for deliciously bad characters or flawed  characters, and when a character is kind of the, you know, good guy,  they’re not as interested.<br />

And obviously they did their  best [for Apollo] but it’s a little frustrating for the actor because  you want more conflict, and more edge, and more things to deal with.<br />

But  unfortunately, the good guys, or good girls, are so overlooked and  unappreciated and it’s an interesting kind of thing that people are  always, in a sense… They want more of the bad thing, they’re always  attracted to the dark side, and I guess that’s where our culture is.<br />

The  Starbuck character is kind of the free-roaming bad boy, naughty boy,  and a little bit irresponsible, and the Apollo character is very  responsible, so they wanted to make the Apollo character a little less  responsible and make the Starbuck character a little more responsible.  Not take away who they were, but just to bring a little more balance  into the characters. So I think that was in their thinking – in their  plotting – of where they wanted to go.<br />
<br />
<u><span style="background-color: white;">Onto  the new “Battlestar Galactica,” in which you played an important  character, "Tom Zarek"… What are some differences between the two shows?</span></u><br />

To  create dramatic possibilities, you’ve got to throw these characters  that you’ve grown to love into very challenging circumstances, where  they get tested, and sometimes something happens between them, and then  they fight, they argue, they separate, and then they find out that they  did the wrong thing, or they wish they hadn’t, and they come back and  they become even better friends...<br />
<br />
And that’s the whole story arc of  drama: that you create controversy, you throw gasoline on the fire  because you want to build the drama – so you’re always looking for  conflict.<br />

But  again, we [the original series] started out with the show developing  characters that won you over, that had great relationships with each  other, the father/son relationship, everything in there was a great  relationship between these characters.<br />
<br />
The new show  kind of had every character being complex, very flawed, morally  conflicted, and it took a while to get into those characters and like  them because they seemed to have so many issues and problems. But  as the show went on, we got to see their humanity, we got to see a  deeper part of who these characters were, and then we slowly bonded to  these characters, and fell in love with these characters as well...<br />
<br />
So in a  sense they started out making the characters very conflicted, and in  some cases unlikable, and then we grew to love them, and we grew to love  the relationships. Whereas the original show started  out with us loving these characters, they were not so flawed, and we  could bond with them immediately.<br />

But  then I think had the show gone on, we would have had to go the  direction of the new show and these characters would have to be put into  edgier circumstances, because every show seeking drama is going to find  conflict for their starring characters.<br />

Well  we evolved that... People don’t realize that they had a basic thought or  idea of what the game might be, but when we got out on the court, we  kind of evolved how it would play...<br />

There was a court, it looked like a  basketball court; it was a combination of football and basketball and  soccer and there was a whole thing of trying to get it through and we  figured out the logistics of it... We kind of played with it with the stunt guys and we evolved the way the whole game’s played, so that was fun to be part. And the spandex was a little painful, but other than that…<br />

Resembling Art Carney after a crash diet, Johnny Knoxville plays Irving Zisman, a crabby, accidental-prone coot with permanent beer-goggles who gets reluctantly stuck with his tubby grandson...<br />

The plot, like any road movie, is simple enough: Irving drives young Billy to live with his father, a drug dealer looking forward to a hopeful $600 a month government child support; but when Jackass is concerned, does a plot really matter? Well it does and it doesn’t as expository scenes where Irving and Billy are alone, not shocking the normal people (supposedly being) filmed in secret, are somewhat awkward… and yet the characters are cushy and likable... Billy, played by Jackson Nicoll, is perfectly cast. He looks like the kind of kid you’d never imagine starring in a movie… The last child left at an orphanage. In fact his dull, droopy-eyed, monotone personality serves as a constant punchline: asking strangers blunt questions, sharing secrets about his drug addict mother and helping Grandpa with con games.<br />

The big trailer-spoiled stunts, from Irving crashing a mini-helicopter ride through a store window to being practically mangled in a mechanical bed, seem very contrived and aren’t that funny…<br />

Meanwhile the finale, taking place in a children's beauty contest, is straight out of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE… Yet what’s really humorous is Knoxville’s dead-on performance as an old guy who sees every woman as drop-dead gorgeous. And the subtle cantankerous lines that, even in this completely exaggerated role, aren’t far from how certain old men (you may even be related to one) behave: using their advanced age to get away with just about anything – a perfectly suited Jackass scheme that results in an engaging, and surprisingly laidback, experience.<br />

The Birthday scene was the very first scene shot. John Milius had a few friends too as extras. He asked me to start filming as he thought that I would relax everyone and do it well! I didn’t know who Brian Keith was nor John Houston, can you believe! Yes we were all at the table. How amazing is that! This scene was shot in a hotel in Madrid, night shooting. Such fun having breakfast before going back to our hotel for a day’s sleep!<br />

The growling bear scene went quite smoothly. Although one of the actors couldn’t remember his lines and was a bit weird, I don’t know who he was! A very bland and staccato way of speaking. Maybe he was a friend too!<br />
<br />
When I first started filming they said that they would definitely be dubbing my voice as my American dialect wasn’t very good! Carolyne McCoy – John Milius’ secretary and Darrell Fetty’s girlfriend at the time – took great pain in going over my lines and my intonations. It worked… They used my voice!<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><u>Where were your scenes in THE WIND AND THE LION filmed?</u></span><br />

When I first arrived in Madrid, they were filming some of the White House scenes with Brian Keith as Teddy Roosevelt at The Palace Hotel. Man, it was exciting to be there – a major, old-time Hollywood production starring Sean Connery with an International cast and a huge European crew. The American train sequences were also filmed in Madrid at an old Spanish rail station. <br />
<br />
My palace scenes were at the Alcazar in Seville. Originally a Moorish fortress, after Ferdinand II conquered Spain in 1248, the Alcazar was renovated as the palace for the Kings of Castille. Seville was a beautiful location. The polo match was in an Alcazar courtyard. That's legendary stuntman Terry Leonard crashing the bikes in the beginning of my scene there. Terry did practically all the stunts in the movie.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><u>How long did it take to shoot the carriage scene?</u></span><br />

That scene took most of the day. I remember waiting a long time all set up and ready to go, with John being frustrated because our unflappable British cinematographer Billy Williams wouldn't shoot until the sun was just right. Billy shot several classic Ken Russell films (including WOMEN IN LOVE) as well as the famous Iraq opening of THE EXORCIST. He can be seen in THE WIND AND THE LION's opening scene as the white-haired English Nobleman having tea with Candace Bergen just before he gets shot by the marauding Berber bandits and mutters an exasperated, "Damn."<br />
<br />
The men playing the slaves pulling the carriage were U.S. Marines stationed in Spain. They were good guys and great sports about doing that scene. They were in some military sequences as well. In fact, because those scenes were so authentic, even though it's a period movie, the Marine Corps still uses some of the footage in training films.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><u>One of the coolest shots is where you, Geoffrey Lewis, Roy Jenson and Steve Kanaly are framed against that picture ("World at war... World War… Now that would be something to go out on")... How many takes for this?</u></span><br />

John got a lot of coverage for that scene. I think it was shot in some old Embassy building in Seville. What I remember most is hanging out with the guys – Geoffrey Lewis (Clint Eastwood's sidekick in a bunch of movies, among other notable roles in his long career), Roy Jenson (bad-ass character actor in dozens of classic films including CHINATOWN), and Steve Kanaly who was closer to my age and just starting out as well.<br />
<br />
After the movie was released, I had an actor friend remark that he thought that was my best scene. Since I had no lines in that scene, I thought it was kind of a dubious compliment – but he said because of how I listened and reacted, he thought I was the focus of the scene – that my character was planning something important – he could see Dreighton's inner life, his political aspirations and future schemes… or maybe it was just a passive/aggressive dig and my friend was jerking me around. If I was really doing all that and pulling focus from what it was supposed to be about, I screwed up the scene!<br />

Epic filmmaking at its best. Part of it was shot in Seville and the rest in Almeria, Spain, where Sergio Leone shot his famous Clint Eastwood westerns. It took several days, and I watched a lot of the filming. When I wasn't working I was usually on the set, because it was fascinating to watch the work and spend time with all the amazing people involved.<br />
<br />
I mean, imagine, besides Sean Connery, Brian Keith, and Candace Bergen, I got to hang with legendary writer/director/actor John Huston! I later did a movie called THE MADDENING starring Burt Reynolds and directed by John's son Danny Huston, who is also a fine actor, most recently co-starring as Sam Adams in HBO's JOHN ADAMS mini-series.<br />

The shot of the American Naval fleet in the harbor was one of the few matte shots (special effects) in the film. There was also a scene in which a number of cardboard human cutouts were planted in the crowd of extras to make it seem more like even larger masses of people.<br />
<br />
Remember, this was all before CGI, so otherwise the movie was all real people and real locations.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;"><u>You appeared in two very different kinds of John Milius films, THE WIND AND THE LION and BIG WEDNESDAY… Did John's style differ on each?</u></span><br />
<i><br /></i>
John likened directing a film to being a General leading a military campaign. And he was a great general – always in charge but fun, easy-going, approachable… and tough when he had to be. He knew what he wanted but trusted his "troops" and specialists to do their jobs.<br />
<br />
I don't remember any tension on the set. John loved being there and doing what he was doing… although it did become more stressful toward the end of filming in Spain. After the final shot, John was helicoptered out of a remote location, which he compared to escaping the fall of Saigon.<br />

On all his movies John pays close attention to details and authenticity because of his vast knowledge and respect for history. I would say the script was followed more exactly on THE WIND AND THE LION than on BIG WEDNESDAY, which, within specific contexts, allowed somewhat for a more improvisational style.<br />
<br />
That coming-of-age/surfing story epitomized much of John's personal experience when he was growing up, so it was a major passion for him. He had a lot of fun chronicling (with fellow surfer and co-writer Denny Aaberg) that era for the ages.<br />

I really felt like his daughter. <u>JOHN HUSTON</u>: It was amazing working with him, after I found out who he was! <u>STEVE KANALY:</u> He was fabulous and I got very friendly with his girlfriend. They visited London and came to supper, I remember! I kept in touch with his girlfriend for a long while. She told me when he had done a pilot for a new television drama in The States and was hoping it was going to be a success… The Drama turned out to be DALLAS!<br />

<u>JOHN MILIUS</u>: We got on very well. He had fallen in love with me in A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA [pictured below] and sent for me when he was casting in London… I remember my agents calling me with a very short time to get myself prepared! I was wearing my kilt that day and really didn’t have time to get ready for a casting! I definitely think he had a very soft spot for me! I also tried to keep in touch with him but with difficulty. I don’t believe he ever got my letters. He did say that he was working on another project that I would be perfect for but it never materialized. <u>DARRELL FETTY</u>: I knew his girlfriend [Carolyne McCoy] very well... We spent a lot of time together. Unfortunately I lost contact but thanks to you I will be able to get in touch again.<br />
