And although not as conventionally entertaining, there's a murkier depth than its successful competitor, THE LOST BOYS.<br /> <br /> And while Pasdar is a dependable – though somewhat wooden – lead protagonist, the best moments concern Paxton’s daredevil lunacy or Jenny Wright’s docile-doomed expressions as each inevitable dawn draws in: Perhaps NEAR LIGHT would have been a more fitting title, as these vamps are continuously playing time with loaded dice.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div>

And through it all, our brawny heroes survive just about anything thrown at them – and then some. Now part III has shoved the whole blackout device under the carpet. This time "The Wolf Pack" is sent on a mission by a mobster (John Goodman) to recover gold bars stolen by Mr. Chow. <br /> <br /> That’s the basic plot in a nutshell, and we start off with the three friends… Bradley Cooper’s reluctant leader, Phil; Ed Helms as the group’s guinea pig, Stu; and the flaky bearded man-child Alan played by Zach Galifianakis… venturing into Mexico to find the elusive Asian wacko, more of a formidably indestructible secret agent than a second-tier comic relief – and is given way too much screen time.<br /> <br /> Most of the capers… from robbing (what seems to be) Chow’s mansion in Mexico to, once the boys return to their roots in Las Vegas, climbing down the Caesars Palace Hotel penthouse using tied-up bed sheets… could have made up several decent trailers for a non-comedic thriller. Which is exactly what this third (and supposedly final) HANGOVER has to offer: a few action sequences and nothing more. So why waste time knocking the movie for not being funny when it never really tries to be? That is, until about fifteen seconds into the end credits: If you paid to see a comedy, this is your best bet.

Immensely cold and stealthily calculating, he has what it takes to be a hit man, something Demeo (Ray Liotta) sees in him right away. The first couple hits are pretty intense but not very suspenseful. With somber music orchestrating each scene – the mechanics of a lost soul given its own melancholy dirge – and sporadic ultra violent montages, we never get too up close and personal into the bloody reality of Kuklinski’s profession, at least not right away.<br /> <br /> The twist here is that Kuklinski has a family while working as a hit man. Enter Wionna Ryder as his soft-spoken passive wife, Deborah, supposedly oblivious to her husband's occupation. With two beautiful daughters, the Kuklinski clan seems like a Norman Rockwell painting. But the family scenes spend too much time wallowing in a contrived sense of irony, never standing out on their own merit. Until the mobsters hit too close to home, and Kuklinski begins showing his dark side in front of the wife and kids, allowing Michael Shannon to emote past an otherwise limited steely countenance. One particular scene, after Kuklinski lets a seventeen-year-old girl witness go unharmed, and then attempts to protect her from a fellow hit man named Mr. Freezy (played by Chris Evans, who would introduce him to the art of freezing victims to thwart the cop’s timetable), shows us a vulnerable side missing in the segments with family and friends. This also provides a Film Noir aspect of a killer with a kind heart beating, somewhere. But like some of the duller Noirs, there’s more style than substance going on.<br /> <br /> Kuklinski’s gig wasn’t a short one. The searing biopic zooms from the sixties to the eighties through music and distinguishing hairstyles and mustaches all sizes, yet there’s never a sense of importance in any decade. That is, we never stick in one place long enough for anything to really matter.

With long black hair, flour white makeup and the countenance of a shocked deer in drag, Penn’s gothic, melancholy Cheyenne is a has-been alternative rock star who, living in Dublin with his wife… more like a mother, older sister and nurse rolled into one… is taking it very easy in his sluggish semi retirement.<br /> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"> Penn's voice takes a little getting used to: Sounding like a cross between a medicated Michael J. INCREDIBLY. The bassist and drummer were good and the "replacement singer" had a nasally voice and looked more like Horseshack from "Welcome Back Kotter" than The Lizard King, but this was okay (and perhaps intentional)... he wasn't trying to replace Morrison but was simply carrying the vocals so Robby and Ray could do their stuff. </div> <div style="margin: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div style="margin: 0px;"> The peak of the set was Krieger's unbelievable five minute flamenco guitar solo, which then lead to an awesome "Spanish Caravan." Kirk. He’s the Captain of a Starship, sure, but as a risk taker he tends to land himself, and his crew, in loads of trouble. So now he’s really in his element as the Enterprise winds up on a classified mission that has nothing to do with Federation rules or having to stick by them.<br /> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> First we begin with another mission – one gone completely haywire. Thrust into a perilous situation, director J.J. Abrams lets us know this won’t be anything short of a rollercoaster ride. Thankfully there are enough cerebral elements further along that... reminiscent of the original series that relied more on chess match precision than adventurous gusto… brings us back into an old school aura including prosthetic aliens and various references to other characters from times past – or in this case, present… </div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> Where Kirk, after putting the Prime Directive (to not interfere with the internal development of alien civilizations) in jeopardy... and following an act of domestic terrorism... the Enterprise ventures to a planet to find the culprit, a mysterious superhuman named Harrison, who did undercover work for the Federation – Marcus (Peter Weller) in particular, the man responsible for bringing Kirk’s mentor, the endearingly lecturing Admiral Pike, into the Federation. </div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> The second half roars with unbridled energy: a resilient Enterprise shuttle lands on a planet replete with the usually combative Klingons. Yet these fallback foes mean little to our story: it’s Harrison – who we eventually learn is the infamous warrior Khan – holding most of the cards... Within this constantly shuffled deck are twists and turns (while another important antagonist lurks in the shadows) that shouldn't be spoiled. And the way all secrets are revealed gel smoothly with the action sequences, each pivotal to the story and with little downtime in-between. </div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> While not entirely flawless... The awkward post-romantic banter between Spock and Uhura feels contrived; one particular scene is way too similar to a past TREK movie; and  Kirk eventually becomes a brooding Marvel style superhero… Thankfully the other crew members, especially Spock... tempted to follow his human emotions… and Scotty, given his own subplot that ties loose ends together… has important footing in this <i>sequel to a reboot of a franchise</i> that hasn’t neglected its primal roots and doesn't completely adhere to a video game generation.</div> <!--EndFragment-->

But that doesn’t mean the flawed yet resilient Tommy’s role isn’t important and more than sporadic...<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: right;"> </div> After an entertaining half hour setting things up for Wilder’s naïve Avram, reminiscent of a Mel Brooks comedy where the punchline… in this case a Jew in the Wild West… owns the film's initial structure, KID eventually becomes an adventurous pairing of two polar opposites. (And if you take away a pointless fifteen minutes when our heroes are captured by Indians, it’s a helluva neat ride.)<br /> <br /> Directed by Robert Aldrich, the intense lead villain – played by the always-formidable William Smith – will make you forget this is an intentional comedy. Meanwhile, scenes where Tommy teaches the religiously stubborn Avrim how to survive on newly-acquired existential savvy feels like an actual cowboy picture... Leading to a bloody gunfight followed by the inevitable “do or die” showdown on a dusty main street.<br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; He’s already raped another inmate, that being scene-stealer and poster girl Sharon Farrell as Melanie.
