A vision in the form of redhead Ringwald’s Randy Jensen who, hanging out at a mob-run nightclub and in debt with gangster Harvey Keitel, is anything but a damsel in distress...<br /> <br /> She's assertive and opinionated and unfortunately, for a guy like Downey’s Jack Jericho, where <i>the chase</i> is everything, very loose and progressive – they’re in back of his car within hours of meeting, and, afterwards, she's not smitten: He’s just another number... In fact she doesn't even want his... Which causes Jack to drop his skirt-chasing habit and he has but one goal: to get Randy and "friend" Dennis Hopper out of debt. And there’s something new around every corner of this diamond in the rough rom-com: Although the best moments have Downey by himself trying to wheel his way into, out of, around and about schemes with a wry likeable countenance, no surprise to his IRON MAN fan base. Or a young man on a clipper ship being slowly poisoned, befriended by a rogue slave who becomes his protector.<br /> <br /> A more lighthearted tale has Jim Broadbent as an aged book editor trying to escape an old folks home. The wide-scoped stories include an Asian worker/clone in a BLADE RUNNER-looking future seeking the truth of her origin. And an even more distant time has a nomadic Tom Hanks aided by an interstellar Halle Berry to free his people from tyranny. A musical piece titled The Cloud Atlas connects things in a somewhat linear fashion  – written by a young gay man working for a cantankerous has-been composer (Broadbent again), who may never get credit for the surreptitious masterpiece.<br /> <br /> The three directors, including the brains behind THE MATRIX, hand off each piece nicely, combining romance, melodrama, and laser-blasting action... The pace only drags when one too many peaks occur without closure. The final payoffs, including Big Oil and Racism, are a tad simplistic and could have been dreamt up by a socially conscious sixth grader. But what makes CLOUD ATLAS never shrug to the epic scale is that each level has its own basic energy: you’ll not only want to see how everything connects as a whole, but how each person survives all that fate has to offer.

A no-brainer.<br /> <br /> Then we flash to Mills in Los Angeles – he’s a man who’s been through the ringer and it shows. Displaying a compulsive disorder he has but one agenda... to keep an eye on his daughter Kim (Maggie Grace), who’s got a new boyfriend. Cut ahead: His ex wife and daughter meet him in Turkey and soon enough the action begins.<br /> <br /> This time Mills and his wife are kidnapped while Kim, holed up in the hotel while her father – via cell phone – provides tactical instructions: from throwing grenades out of windows to dodging assassins.<br /> <br /> Soon father and daughter are reunited and a car chase occurs with her driving – Kim, who couldn’t pass the driving test back home, is suddenly a cross between BULLITT and Popeye Doyle of THE FRENCH CONNECTION… But what's reality compared to farfetched escapist fun? Bryan, with a steel-trapped brain that can memorize sounds and think his way out of any situation, makes for such an involving cerebral hero all the bloody fights seem beneath him.<br /> <br /> And with so much action the time flies quickly: not a bad thing in an age of overlong, overcomplicated thrillers. The camera weaves in and out in dialog sequences but isn't too shaky during the brawls. While Neeson once again proves he’s got the chops of a younger cinema hero – but a third outing would be a big reach.
