Both starring John Cusack as a frustrated teenage cartoonist, BETTER OFF DEAD and ONE CRAZY SUMMER are character-driven cult classics...<br /> <br /> In Holland’s third and final theatrical release, HOW I GOT INTO COLLEGE, about a lovelorn teenager attempting to con his way into higher education, the titular plot keeps Savage Steve from providing the usual frantic anything-goes adventure as Corey Parker, who transformed pretty well into a geeky private in BILOXI BLUES, provides decent comedy chops but lacks Cusack's universal every-kid charm, as well as the ability to headline an entire movie, comedy or otherwise. The signature Savage animation is replaced by two doomed goofballs stuck in dire situations, from being surrounded by sharks to skydiving, part of "Stress Questions" Parker can’t answer on his S.A.T. test. And on the spy side are various scenes with Broderick Crawford, Scott Brady, John Carradine, and the James Bond character played by a fittingly-suave cool-cat, John Gabriel.<br /> <br /> If you center solely on the original movie, THE FAKERS, from which the biker stuff was pasted on after this film was abandoned and retitled HELL'S BLOODY DEVILS, it can be an entertaining, and often involving, exploitation fluff that only director Al Adamson could provide. Because in this second (and far superior) outing of THE EXPENDABLES, there are plenty of cool action scenes – and a simple yet dependable plot about stolen plutonium that can destroy the world.<br /> <br /> With enough gunshots and explosions to fill a dozen action movies, this teamup, also including Dolph Lundgren as the spaced-out giant Gunner and newcomer Nan Yu as the female tekkie, works fine together. And putting the usual time-running-out plot aside, this is really about revenge after the youngest member of the group is murdered by the villain (named Vilian) played by Jean-Claude Van Damme.<br /> <br /> So the big question: do legendary tough guys Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and “Lone Wolf” Chuck Norris have worthy input... or are they merely glorified cameos?<br /> <br /> A little of both: as sporadic guest stars they come and go – but each has a few memorable gun-wielding scenes to matter. And with all the extra muscle including Terry Crews, Jet Li and Randy Couture, this is director Stallone’s ride. He's super pissed like RAMBO and yet, despite the heavy odds, remains in complete control.

He’s given a chance to head a small town college team in the middle of nowhere, and he has to import street kids onto the team: These include the troublesome D.C. Like the SPIDERMAN reboot, the main character of TOTAL RECALL is a lot more serious and brooding.<br /> <br /> Colin Farrell is Douglas Quaid in a future resembling BLADE RUNNER with a stronger work ethic. He and his buddy build police robots but Quaid is not content. Haunted by violent dreams of a mysterious woman, he’s wondering if there’s something better than his dreary existence. Heck, even his gorgeous wife is concerned.<br /> <br /> Unlike Sharon Stone’s sexy and lethal Lori Quaid of the original, Kate Beckinsale is more like Tommy Lee Jones in THE FUGITIVE. But that’s once Quaid… after using Total Recall in which, as your head's strapped to electrodes, implanted memories seem more than real… is on the run: he’s actually a spy that can free an underground Resistance from an oppressive dictator bent on… some sort of mass attack.<br /> <br /> The problem is there’s more action than storyline – but that doesn’t stop each character from spouting loads of boring exposition between each bombastic chase.<br /> <br /> Sure, it all looks cool, but the villains and the good guys seem too much alike to mean anything to the viewer.<br /> <br /> So while Arnold Schwarzenegger eventually had something to fight for on the planet Mars, Colin Farrell, stuck on Earth, is merely surviving. And since he was never totally strapped into that titular memory machine in the first place, his recall means very little this time around.

Luckily, Will Ferrell’s Cam Brady, a cross between Mitt Romney (hair of steel) and Bill Clinton (libido of a jackrabbit) is a little more understandable: especially in a film about politicians.<br /> <br /> Brady is a "Safe Seat" Representative of a North Carolina district up against the weird and wimpy Huggins. Backed by two crooked moguls, carbon copies of The Duke Brothers from TRADING PLACES, Huggins is anything but phony. It takes assertive political advisor Dylan McDermott to turn him into everything he’s against.<br /> <br /> The problem with THE CAMPAIGN is we’re not quite sure what Huggins really stands for to make his inevitable steely transition make sense – and the jokes aren’t very funny. Not even Ferrell's constant attempts as the comfortably glib jerk pull through. The best parts, occurring in montages about each politician trying to win votes, were shown in the trailers, so there’s nothing fresh to stand behind.<br /> <br /> If anyone deserves your vote it’s Jason Sudeikis as Brady’s mellow, faithful campaign advisor. He at least seems like a real person in a movie centering on two comic actors acting like cartoons.
