THE SLUGGER'S WIFE

title: THE SLUGGER'S WIFE
year: 1985
cast: Michael O'Keefe, Rebecca DeMorney
rating: *1/2

The worst film Hal Ashby ever directed is the worst script Neil Simon ever wrote. The slugger is a big league baseball player, Michael O'Keefe, who meets a nightclub rock singer, Rebecca DeMorney. He can't hit without her and she can't sing... no matter. Yet we're to believe, with a voice only a shower could love, she's on the verge of a record deal. This unintentionally hilarious mess goes from the ball field to the nightclub and eventually, as the star-crossed lovers date and quickly marry, the bedroom. And while both leads are talented actors, they seem to be auditioning for a high school play: and a lousy one at that.
